Basic Arpeggio

arpeggio

For beginners the first question maybe what is an arpeggio? Why do I need to know an arpeggio and how can they make me a better guitar player. All of these arpeggio questions are good.

As to what an arpeggio is well the word comes from the Italian word “arpeggiare”, which means “to play on a harp”. Interesting I guess. However it does sort of lead me into my next explanation. What is an arpeggio? An arpeggio is a group of notes played one after another. Very much like a harp. The catch here is these are not just random notes. These notes are in fact notes that make up a chord.

What arpeggio scale you will be playing is based directly on the root letter of the chord. Meaning that a C chord is played and the scale that is used for this is the C arpeggio. Let me clarify a bit if you are playing a C major chord and you wish to play the C major arpeggio scale then you would simply play1 3 5 tones from the major scale. The major arpeggio scale is made up of the major scale and is the 1 3 5 tones from the root notes major scale.

I suppose I should go into the major scale a bit. The major scale really is just what it says it is the major scale or most important scale. This scale is what most songs or melodies are written from. Chords are build around it and most scales as well. There are 7 note in the major scale and you will hear them referred to a lot as 1 2 3 4 5 6 7. This may seem sort of silly or strange but it is not and it really is simple the root note is one and you just count from there so when I say you are playing a C major arpeggio scale as it relates to the C major scale you are playing the 1 3 5 or the C E G from the major scale. Another way to describe these notes are the tones of the chord.

A very important reason for learning this scale is for improvisation. Rather than just running up and down basic scales mix in some of the arpeggio scale for a slightly different sound. Also they can be used to spell out the sound of the chord or create melodic interest.

In a nut shell this is what arpeggios are and how they can and will improve you as a guitar player.
